Finnish investors’ concern about US political decisions rises

Global uncertainty is still Finnish investors' biggest concern when it comes to investing, according to a recent survey commissioned by OP Pohjola (OP) financial group.
About 45 per cent of all respondents said that the uncertain global and economic situation is by far the most common concern related to investing, said OP in a press release on Friday referring to the survey conducted by survey organisation Taloustutkimus. The share has remained the same compared to the survey conducted at the end of 2024.
"A few years ago, it was thought that when it came to investing, people were more concerned about their own know-how and risk tolerance, but now worries about the global situation are clearly the biggest concern. This is emphasised among young respondents under 25 years of age and older respondents over 65 years of age," said Kai Kalajainen, Director of Wealth Management Sales and Customer Relationships of OP Pohjola.
In particular, concerns about the impact of the US president's actions on the value of investments have increased.
According to the survey, 45 per cent of Finns who have investments in shares, funds or other securities are very or somewhat concerned about the issue. The corresponding share a year earlier was clearly smaller.
Now, one in five Finnish investors is very concerned about the impact of the US president's actions on the value of investments, while a year ago only 9 per cent of Finnish investors thought this way.
Although concern has grown and 10 per cent feel that the actions of the US president influence their investment decisions very much, and almost a third quite a lot, around 22 per cent of respondents say that the US president's actions do not influence their investment decisions at all.
Finland's economic situation is taken into account in investment decisions, but few people feel that this alone drives the willingness to invest in the domestic stock exchange.
Up to 30 per cent feel that the economic situation affects their willingness to invest in Nasdaq Helsinki a lot or quite a lot, but there has been a clear change in attitude.
The share of those who think that Finland's economic situation has no impact on investing at all has halved since 2024.
In 2024, as many as 37 per cent of respondents said that Finland's economic situation had no impact at all, and now only 18 per cent say so.
