UPM to temporarily shut down 2 pulp mills to cut production

The Finnish forest-based bio-industry company UPM will shut down its two pulp mills temporarily to reduce production in August and October respectively, said the company in a press release on Thursday.

The Kaukas pulp mill will be temporarily shut down as of August 3, for approximately six weeks.

In addition, a potential temporary shutdown of the UPM Pietarsaari pulp mill is being planned for October.

These shutdowns are intended to optimize production levels and wood sourcing and to ensure profitability in the current market and cost environments, the press release added.

Earlier UPM permanently stop paper production at Kaukas, Lappeenranta in 2025.

In July 2025, UPM announced plans to permanently end paper production in Kaukas and to shift its coated mechanical paper production in Finland to UPM Rauma mill.
