7000 nurses gather in Helsinki ICN congress to focus challenges, find solutions

More than 7000 nurses from 130 countries joined the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress held at Messukeskus in Helsinki from June 9 to June 13, said a press release.

Participants in the congress focused the ongoing challenges in nursing sector and tried to find out a collective solution.

They pointed out that healthcare systems worldwide are facing staffing shortages, rising demands, and the aftershocks of a global pandemic and the ICN Congress offered a rare and timely space for collaboration, innovation, and solidarity.

Finland is currently facing critical challenges in healthcare for examples nurse shortages, workforce burnout, and major health system reform (the social and healthcare reform or so called Sote reform), the participants said.

While every region has unique challenges, there were also common themes such as retaining nurses, ensuring mental well-being, and adapting healthcare to a changing world.

From Africa to Asia, from the Americas to Europe, nurses shared experiences and explore new models, from digital care and community health initiatives to stronger leadership roles for nurses in policymaking.

Finland and other Nordic countries Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland, are deeply involved in this international collaboration.

Long respected for their healthcare systems, the Nordics are also navigating shifts, aging populations, the need for more flexible career paths, and increasing pressure on public services, they observed.

Healthcare reform and digital transformation in Finland are shaping a more integrated care environment.

While there are challenges related to staffing and system change, there is also momentum toward solutions supported by a highly educated workforce and a culture of innovation.

ICN Chief Executive Officer Howard Catton and President Pamela Cipriano encouraged the delegates to think globally and act locally.

They emphasised that the future of healthcare depends on a respected, supported, and empowered nursing workforce.
