Govt unveils measures to curb record-high unemployment

Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen on Wednesday outlined the government's measures to tackle the country's rising unemployment, reported Xinhua.

Speaking in parliament, Marttinen said the authorities are treating the issue with seriousness.

According to Statistics Finland, the country's unemployment rate climbed to 10 percent in August — the highest level since the national Labor Force Survey began in 2009. The sharp increase has sparked public concern.

Marttinen said the government is addressing structural problems through reforms aimed at making work more rewarding, cutting bureaucracy, and boosting competitiveness.

Income taxes will be reduced by 1.6 billion euros over the government term, and corporate taxation will be eased to attract more investment in clean industries, he said.

The minister also noted that early signs of recovery are emerging, with employment expected to pick up later this year and unemployment to start declining in 2026.
