Lumber price on wane in August in Finland

Roundwood prices continued to fall in August in Finland, according to Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

In standing sales, average log prices have fallen by four to five euros from their peak in June, and pulpwood prices by around three euros.

In August, industrial roundwood purchases were down by more than a quarter compared to last year.

In standing sales in August, spruce logs were paid for an average of EUR 82 and pine logs for EUR 80 per cubic meter.

Prices fell by more than two euros, or nearly 3%, compared to July. The price of birch logs fell by 3% to below EUR 65.

The standing sale prices of pulpwood fell by a greater percentage than those of sawlogs.

The average price of spruce pulpwood fell well below EUR 34, while the prices of pine and birch pulpwood dropped below EUR 32.

The standing sale prices of pine and spruce logs have fallen by around four euros from their June peaks, birch logs by almost five euros, and pulpwood by around three euros.

Despite this, the real price of birch logs remained at the average level for the whole of last year, and the prices of other main roundwood assortments were 2–4 percent higher.

Delivery sales prices also fell. In pulpwood procurement deals, prices fell one percent from July to between EUR 53 and EUR 55.

In August, 28 percent less industrial roundwood was purchased from private forests than last year. This was 20 percent below the average figures for the previous five years.

Purchase volumes were significantly lower than last year for the fourth consecutive month.

However, volumes in the early part of the year were so high that the cumulative volume of timber sales from January to August was only six percent lower than last year. The average for the previous five years was exceeded by six percent.
