Mercedes-Benz sees sales plunge 12% in Q3

German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz saw sales fall an annual 12% in the third quarter amid weak performance in China and the United States, reported dpa.

The Stuttgart-based company said on Tuesday that it sold 525,300 cars and vans to dealers over the period.

Over the first nine months of the year, sales are down 9% to around 1.6 million vehicles, off the back of a 4% fall in 2024.

Like many of its German rivals, Mercedes is facing a prolonged decline in sales amid difficulties in the Chinese market, where competition from domestic manufacturers is rising and the appetite for spending on luxury vehicles has dropped due to economic struggles.

Company sales of passenger cars in China plunged 27% compared to the third quarter of 2024, although it said sales of "top-end" vehicles were up 13% year-on-year.

In the US market, sales fell by 17%, although the company argued that "stock levels in the US were carefully calibrated to mitigate tariff impacts" and deliveries rose 6% in the year to date.

Sales of electric vehicles were stable year-on-year at 42,600 in the third quarter, as the company delivered its first vehicles in the new all-electric CLA model.

Overall, Mercedes recorded an increase of 10% in sales of expensive top-end models such as the G-Class and S-Class, a key focus for chief executive Ola Källenius.

However, sales of vans fell by 8% in the third quarter.
