OL2 nuke plant to continue reduced power generation until 2027
Electricity production at Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) nuclear power plant will continue at a reduced power level until the 2027 annual outage, said the owner of the plant Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) in a press release late Tuesday night.
According to a previous announcement, electricity production at Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) has been operated at a reduced power level of 735 MW in order to reduce the risk of failure, since TVO currently does not have a spare generator rotor in storage.
The refurbished spare rotor is expected to arrive at Olkiluoto in early 2026.
As a result of conservative analyses, the unit’s electricity production will continue at the reduced power level of 735 MW until a completely new rotor has been received at Olkiluoto.
The unit’s full capacity is 890 MW. The completely new and technically improved rotor is expected to arrive at Olkiluoto by the 2027 annual outage.
Previously, TVO had announced that the reduced power level would continue until the 2026 annual outage.
The annual outages in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant ended in June 2025 and the plant resumed power generation at reduced level.
Electricity production at the Olkiluoto 2 plant unit (OL2) was interrupted on April 15, due to increased moisture detected in the turbine island’s generator.
The rotor of OL2's generator malfunctioned last autumn, and the unit has been operated at reduced power for several months to prevent further damage and due to a shortage of spare parts.
Earlier on April 12, the TVO announced that the Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) nuclear power plant unit will return to full power output of 890 megawatts on April 19.
